Macbook Pro wake from sleep problem
My Macbook Pro is refusing to properly wake from sleep with increasing regularity. When I go to use my MBP some time after I've initially put it to sleep, I notice that the machine is warm (it should be cold if it was sleeping) and the small white light is actually on (instead of pulsing when it's sleeping). But the machine will be totally unresponsive and the screen is blank or dark (I can't make out anything on the screen). Nothing seems to be able to get it out of this limbo mode except for a hard reset by holding down the power button. It seems that there has been a lot more problems ever since Apple moved to the Intel platform. My G5 iMac has been rock steady for the past two years and I've never had any issues with it.
A search on Apple's Macbook Pro discussion forum using the terms "wake from sleep" turns up countless threads on this topic. Some of the discussions date back to early 2006 ! I will have to try some of the suggestions on the forum to see if this resolves the problems but I'm not really holding out much hope as the responses from others indicate that none of the solutions are actually solutions. Here are some suggestions that I have been able to distill from the discussions :
1. Removing plists
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagemenet.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.autowakesettings.plist
2. Reset SMC
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

3. Reset PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
4. Check seating of memory chips
Swap memory chips between top and bottom sockets.
5. Vary the brightness
To turn on the backlight after sleeping, vary the brightness (F1/F2).
So far, I've tried #1 and #3 above and I've not experienced the problem since. However, I would be cautious to proclaim that the issue has gone away entirely as the issue had quite random. So I'll continue to see if it comes back anytime soon. Fingers crossed it has gone away for good !
UPDATE : So it's been a week or so since I've tried #1 and #3 above. The situation has definitely improved. Whereas previously I was encountering this problem every 4th or 5th sleep session, so far I've only had one occurrence of the laptop not waking from sleep. It looks like it's not a permanent fix but it seems to buy more time.
