Are you a Connector ?

If you are, you're in line to be lavished with many of the world's most innovative products for free. If you are not a Connector, the first question that needs to be addressed is what exactly is a Connector ?

Brad Stone from Newsweek offers the following definition :

In the world portrayed by New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell in his best seller, “The Tipping Point,” our shopping and consumption habits are tethered to the tastes of people called Connectors. These are sociable, influential early adopters so skilled at ferreting out new products, fashions and ideas—and then telling everyone about them—that cultural movements inevitably follow their casual cocktail-party recommendations.

Now, that's settled. So, how does one get into this elite stratosphere of uber trend setters ? Usually being an industry heavy weight helps. Stone's article mentions the likes of Marc Andreesen (if you don't know who he is, you have no hope in hell of ever making it into the Connector-sphere), Pat House (Siebel founder), Rusty Rueff (Electronic Arts), Sean Parker (Napster) and the list goes on.

It's a good thing that last year was the year of the Blog because a number of influential bloggers also made the cut (there's hope for you and me!). Joi Ito is one such blogging Connector. You can read about his musings on being a Connector.

Seeing that the Connector-sphere is so elitist, we really need some second and third tiers communities of influential late adopters. Anyone interested in being a Sub-connector, Plugger or even a mere Joiner ? Damn, what do I have to do to get my free Brondell high tech toilet seat (one of the many innovative free products being handed out to Connectors) ?
