My original plan was to try to capture the supermoon rising behind the Lick Observatory, which is on the ridge, to the left of this scene. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the alignment correct. Luckily there was some foreground interest to allow me to re-compose the scene.

Kīlauea is a volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, and one of five shield volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaiʻi. It is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. Thirty-five eruptions have taken place since 1952, not including the current episode. Lava less than 1000 years old covers 90% of Kīlauea, and the volume of erupted material is large enough to pave a road around the world three times.(Wikipedia)

Much of the mountain is below sea level; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea stands at more than 10,200 m (33,500 ft), significantly taller than the elevation of Mount Everest above sea level (Everest only rises an average of about 4,150 m [13,600 ft] above its own base).
