The tour saved the best for last - The Golden Gate Bridge [49, 50] !! I visited the Bridge during my last trip to SF as well. That time, I took a cruise which took me under the bridge. I have to admit that the first experience was a much better one. For two reasons. The first is that it is always that much more breathtaking to see such a great structure for the first time (sort of like seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time ..). Secondly, the weather was much better that time. The bridge really glows under sunlight.

  • [49] Golden Gate Bridge
  • [50] Golden Gate Bridge
  • [51] Statue of Joseph Strauss
Having said that, this bridge is still a magnificent structure. I don't know what makes it so alluring. Is it its colour (International Orange) ? Its design ? Or its location ? Maybe a combination of all three ...

Photo 51 is one of the statue of Joseph Strauss, the designer of the bridge. I believe he is a relative of that other Strauss, but I didn't quite catch the commentary on the bus as I had dozed off between Golden Gate Park and here.

I'd like to come back another time when there's fog over the bay. It makes for a truly awesome sight to see the bridge partially shrouded in fog.
